Rady Allahu ‘anh spoke to a crowd of people from the roof.
This was before Qadi Abu Bakr ibn al-‘Arabi, may Allah have Mercy on him, in the Middle Ages.
And it was certainly before the Beatles and, later, U2 during the Joshua Tree tour in 1987.
But, speaking of that song they performed—Where the Streets Have No Name—the actual place is Ethiopia. A place that at the time was in the midst of draught and famine, but filled with love and hospitality to the surprise of the Irishman.
Isn’t Ethiopia right next to Abyssynia, where Rady Allahu ‘anh lived for a number of years?
If anybody is bugging you, let’s go up to the roof.
I went out onto the roof alone and the mob hurled abuse at me. Were it not that Allah had decreed otherwise, I would certainly have been murdered in my own house. Three things moved me to adopt this course of action. The first was the advice of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, ‘Refrain from fighting in times of civil unrest.’ The second was imitation of ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan. And the third was the example of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when he refused to fight the hypocrites when they defamed him, an action confirmed by the Revelation.”
Abu ‘Abd ar-Rahman As-Sulami related that ‘Uthman, when he was besieged, looked out over them, and said, ‘I adjure you by Allah, and I adjure none but the Companions of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, do you not know that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Whoever equips the Army of Difficulty (of Tabuk) then there is the Garden for him.”? And I equipped it. Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Whoever has the well of Rumah dug, then the Garden is for him.”? And I had it dug.’ They affirmed what he said.
This is how Where the streets have no name was born. Bono wrote the lyrics while on a humanitarian visit to Ethiopia with his wife.
