The Presence of The Divine produces its own gravitas in a believer. The gravitas of Rady Allahu ‘anh made the angels shy. How could angels be shy of a believer? There is a saying from, I think, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf in one of his talks: those in the service of the blissful, they too become blissful. What makes the angelic realm bend or curl except the Majestic Awe and Sublime Beauty of The Divine Presence. Perhaps one whose attention is on The Divine makes the created realms shy because he, too, is absorbed with awe-inspiring beauty and majesty.

There is a critical observation in Imam Qushayri’s classic Risala about the following report, which gestures at a slight lack of intimacy between Prophet and Companion due to formality. That worldly formality, if it is in any way a lack in this world, provides an interesting contrast to the other-worldly informality: of all the Companions, may Almighty Allah be pleased with them, Rady Allahu ‘anh is the best friend of Holy Prophet in paradise, peace and blessings be upon him.

Adaban Abadan—Etiquette is Eternal.

‘Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, related that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, gathered his garments around him when ‘Uthman entered and said, ‘Should I not feel shy of a man of whom the angels are shy?’
